PIGLET PROJECT
From April to July 2013 we were lucky to have a Douglas College practicum student Tara with our outreach project. During her stay she implimented a pigle project that will assist families of Ssunga in generating income by raising piglets. This income will go to paying school fees.
This project is to support families in generating income to pay school fees and requirements for their children.
YOU CAN NAME THE PIGLET AFTER YOURSELF OR ANOTHER NAME OF YOUR CHOICE!!!
More Info:
- $20 per piglet will pay for the piglet and the first round of vaccinations
- 1 piglet will serve a minimum of 32 families over 2 years
HOW DOES THE PROJECT WORK?
- the female piglet will be raised until it is of the age to give birth
- after pregnancy and birth all females are given to the project to give to other families to start another line
this will happen for the first 3 pregnancies ONLY
- the family will keep the males to raise until they are of the size/ age to sell and use profits for school fees
- If all males are born two are given to the project so one is sold to buy a female and the other is sold to pay for admin fees of the project. ie: emergency pig care fund, admin travel to meet families, admin phone time to call families
- all families are required to attend a translated information session and to read and sign a contract
